Life: weekend update

We had a 3 three-day weekend, the last one with Star until September 😦

  • It was a productive and relaxing one. We did some house improvements. πŸ™‚ We bought a patio set from IKEA last weekend and now it’s assembled! YEY!!!

Can’t wait to have breakfast and brunch there with friends πŸ™‚

We Star also puts together the changing table for the baby. We got HEMMES from IKEA since it’s more practical to get a dresser instead of a changing table, so it can be used in the future as well.

and the crib.

now that the two major furnitures are assembled, I just need to do the decoration in the following months! πŸ˜‰

  • I made waffles for the week. I made 4 batches and freeze them, so everyday I just need to reheat it in the toaster.

  • Saturday morning we went to strawberries picking! The first ones of the season! We went to Burtler’s Orchard, which is about 35 min drive from home.

It was a gorgeous day to be outdoor. The blue sky, the smell of green grass and the prettiest strawberries. Perfect activity! πŸ™‚

It was not easy to find the perfectly red mature ones, so I was examining carefully

We ended up picking 7 pounds of strawberries. I tasted a few, they’re so juicy and sweet! πŸ™‚

  • Saturday afternoon, an old friend of mine came to visit us. We had a nice chat eating a bunch of chinese candies. πŸ™‚
  • Sunday was Mother’s day, so we had a date with another mom-to-be, my friend Sarah and her husband for brunch at Busboys and Poets

My outfit for the day

this is a new pair of pants that I got from Jcrew for girls, size 12. Yes, you read it right, I bought kids’ cloth and fits my 20+ body perfectly! πŸ˜‰ When I first got it on mail, I tried it in one of those bloating days, I couldn’t zip it, so I was going to return it since I couldn’t tell how it fits me. But then after the bloating went away, it fits me perfectly and I love it. So summery! πŸ™‚ I think in 1-2 weeks I won’t be able to zip it anymore, but at least I know it fits my normal body well. Maybe I could use a pregnant belly band to extend its use for another 1-2 weeks? we’ll see.

Star had classic egg benedict with grits

and I had an omelette with spinach, tomato, onion and feta cheese, served with house salad and toasts

it was a nice way to celebrate mother’s day. Good food and good friends to chat about how our lives will change in few months! πŸ™‚

We invited a friend for dinner at home so I made chinese food for Star and Adam.

Life: weekly recap

This has been a low key weekend, we stayed home most of the time but we did big progress at home! πŸ™‚

  • I’ve been trying to read more this week. Every night I’d spend 30-90 min reading. Star brought me 10+ books from China, and I’ve really enjoy reading them. It’s so easy to get distracted by TV, iPad nowadays that it’s hard to find time to read. But reading is something that I always enjoy a lot, so I like setting up a time for it everyday. πŸ™‚
  • Low key at work. I’ve started two projects with my coworkers. I like working with others because I learn a lot from them, but the inconvenience is that I can’t decide on how it progresses. If they’re busy with others things, I have to wait until I get their feedback to continue. But on Thursday, we’ve finally met and now I’m ready to continue! πŸ™‚ I’m the kind of person that gets bored and discouraged if I don’t have much to do, and energized when I do. Workaholic? I think it’s just I love what I do.Β
  • Friday: can’t remember. baby brain? 😯 oh…. the most relevant thing I did on Friday was to make the purchase of the crib online πŸ™‚ I’ve been debating whether we should buy a high end crib or just a standard one. I like those at pottery barn kids, but they’re way too expensive. At first we were considering to buy a crib that is convertible to full size bed, but then I realized that by the time he gets to use a full size bed, we’d probably have another baby coming. Furthermore, baby/kids don’t take care of the furniture, so if we spend $$$ on a crib and he scratches it, I’d be pissed off. So, why not just buy a good/safe one that functions well as a crib instead of decoration. So, finally after a lot of research online, I’ve decided on this one.
  • Saturday: in the morning we went to IKEA to buy two sets of doors for our new bookcases, a patio setΒ and a dresser that will function as changing table at the nursery. Star finished assembling the bookcases and this is the final look of my office. πŸ™‚

newly purchased bookends

I love how my office looks now. πŸ™‚

  • Sunday: in the morning, we went to the mall to buy these bookends. I watched Contagion after lunch and then took a nap, while Star is assembling the dresser for our little king. πŸ™‚
  • I enjoy a lot this kind of low key weekends with Star. This is the one before last one before he leaves. And then until september I’ll be by my own. So I appreciate even more time alone with him, even if we’re doing different things in the house. Knowing that the other person is close by is enough, it feels safe and peaceful.

Q: if you had/have a baby, what’s the most important piece of furniture/thing in a nursery for you?

Life: weekly updates

This past week some minor improvement to the house were done.

#1 A lamp to be beloved dressing room

IMG_6914

I bought this ceiling lamp 3 months ago and the person who did the renovation only managed to come to install it yesterday. Β I love love love how it fits to the style of the room. soooooo chic and glamour! πŸ™‚

IMG_6915

#2: rug for the living room.

IMG_6922

I wanted to get a rug for the living room for a long time until I saw this one which was on a great deal and I like the pattern.

#3 not a home improvement, but a makeup procedural improvement 😯 Β It’s theΒ beauty blender

IMG_6919

An egg-shaped sponge that makes applying foundation soooo easy. After applying foundation with this, the skin is smooth, dewy and super natural look. I highly recommended it.

I started to read girl in translation. I read half of it already… fascinating! πŸ™‚

–Β We went to a friend’s birthday party on Saturday at an italian restaurant. I ordered gnocchis and Star ravioli with spinach and cheese, I tried the gnocchis and decided to exchange with Star. Somehow when weΒ went back, I got hungry again and had wonton’s at 11pm! 😯

– We went to a Chinese New Year performance at my grad school. A good friend of us played piano. As I watched the performances of some graduate students, it reminded me the five years of grad student life that I had. Although it ended just last year, but as my life has changed so much since then, it seems a long time ago.Β  I felt that I should have enjoyed it more that time, I shouldn’t have stressed about my research so much. But I guess it’s human nature to always focus on the downside of any moment of our lives. We tend to magnify the problem/worry and minimize the rest of it.

Q1: Do you have any must-have makeup utensil?

Q2: What do you remember the most from grad school or college life?
