Food: mom cooks and I bake

Since mom arrived 1.5 month ago, I haven’t cooked AT ALL! When it was only mom and I, we ate simple food. A lot of veggies and some seafood. But now that my dad arrived, more food is needed. Let me tell you, my dad has a monster appetite!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ He seems to have a bottomless stomach. He doesn’t excercice other than walking 1-2 hours everyday, but his appetite is ADMIRABLE! He’s 64 yrs old and he eats like a teenager! Everything seems so tasty to him and he likes trying EVERYTHING! I’m the bad “daughter” telling him constantly to “Not eat too much”, “it’s high in saturate fat”, “it’s high in colesterol”, etc. Sometimes he’d listen, sometimes not. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Samples of daily food:

My mom is in charged of the cooking and I do the rest: BAKING! ๐Ÿ˜†

The day we came back from Orlando, I baked her pound cake with green raisins.

I’m clipping a lot of other baking goodies to make. They’re leaving tomorrow for a tour (Niagaras Fall, Boston and NYC) for 6 days. A little break from my dear parents ๐Ÿ˜‰ Wait… does it mean I have to cook? Maybe! Mom prepared 70 wontons for me in case that I continue to be lazy ๐Ÿ™‚

Q: What’s your parents’ eating style? My mom eats everything in moderation. My dad is a lost case. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ He enjoys EVERYTHING TOO MUCH!

Taking control of your personal finance

I asked you how do you take care of your finance few days ago because I’m a mess and I have no idea how much I spend in a month. I also asked some friends. Ironically four economists (Ph.D to be) and none of us take care of our $$. Not that we have much to take care of (poor grad student) but at least to have an idea of how much we spend in each category raptly. Shame on us ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Yesterday I decided to take control over $$. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ How hard can it be? Well… just couple of hours of “research” until I found two very handy programs ๐Ÿ˜‰

The first one is recommended by Gina:ย Mac iWork Numbers

  • Spreadsheets are built on a flexible, free-form canvas. So you can move tables, charts, graphics, and text anywhere you want on the page. As tables resize, objects automatically adjust to fit around them.
  • Numbers lets you create categories based on information from any column. It automatically generates a summary row for each category. By using just the summary row, you can collapse, expand, and rearrange categories to organize your data any way you want.

Why I like it:

  • It comes with a format for personal finance. You just need to copy paste banking report (summary that you can download from your online banking) into the template and you’ll have a spending summary by category.
  • It’s easy to change font/color.
  • It’s visually prettier than excel.
  • It’s more user friendly than excel.

I’ve created a template. If you need a copy, let me know ๐Ÿ™‚

The second one is Pageonce

Pageonce was designed to help you control your finances. With Pageonce you can easily track your bank accounts, credit cards, investment and travel plans, monitor bills and manage your money. Pageonce is available to online or on your mobile, anytime and anywhere you need it.

What’s so good about it?

  • It’s FREE, just sign up for an account either online or with your iphone.
  • Alerts and notification to pay bills. So, no more late charges.
  • You can add all your account: checking account, credit card, mileage programs, utilities, paypal… etc. You don’t need to log-in in multiple accounts and websites to see your transactions, just Page Once ๐Ÿ˜‰
  • You can take it everywhere. I just download the iphone app (also free).

I recommend Pageonce for daily use (if you are iphone/blackberry user) and Numbers once a week to keep track of your spending. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you’re like me, who never look into bills and don’t keep track of spending, you’d better START NOW. Why? Because things can go out of control, just like what happened to me this month. I got shocked when I realize how much I am spending!!! Some seriously control is needed here.

Back to eats. Nothing fancy but I did make a new breakfast combo

Baked Apple (Manzana Asada). It’s a classic argentinean dessert. Simple, tasty and comforting.

Ingredients:

  • an apple
  • 1/2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • cinnamon

Method:

  • Take out the core of the apple
  • Put the butter and sugar in the hole
  • Bake at 350 F for 30 min
  • Add cinnamon.

I made a mess with a cup of greek yogurt.

YUM~

After a week of random and non standard eats (roasted chicken, indian food and pizza), I craved simple food, mainly veggies.

garlic sauteed chinese green bean

cabbage sauteed with dry shrimp

IMG_9547.JPG

served with oatmeal porridge

A complete leisure day also involved 3 hours nap ๐Ÿ˜ฏ (I woke up at 6AM even though I went to bed at 2AM the night before) andย magazine reading. I had more things to do like cleaning, laundry, exchanging fall-summer clothes, etc, but I was lazy and tired. I guess after a big battle, we need some good rest. ๐Ÿ™‚

Today’s plan: heading to NYC to hear Gotan Project and play with Maggie!!! ๐Ÿ˜†

Q: What’s your favorite kitchen gadget/appliance?

The missing virtue & A review

The first and most difficult virtue for me to cultivate now is PATIENCE. I don’t have it and I never saw it as a problem. Well…. it caught me finally. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ As my research progress, I’m builder bigger models so code running time takes longer and longer. When I complain to my friends that it takes between 30 min – 2 hours to run every time and that I’m very annoyed, they laugh at me!

“is that long? oh.. please! Mine usually takes hours if not days”.

“What?? Seriously? What do you do meanwhile?”

“I don’t know… something else”

“But I need to know the result, I can’t do anything else but I need to know the result!!!”

“yes, we all want to know the result, but it is what it is. You have to get used to it”

Nooooo! I refuse to get used to waste my time, I refuse to snack all day long because of the anxiety, I refuse to depend on a piece of machine my whole day. Bottom line: I refuse to cultivate the missing virtue, Patience.

What to do?

#1: ย keep this way that drives me crazy

#2: Try to be patient by doing something else while the program is running, either work related or just read a good book (since I have a big pile to choose from)

I’m choosing #2. We’ll see how I’ll do today! ๐Ÿ˜‰

——————————

Yesterday for breakfast I finally tried OIAJ. Can you believe that it was my first time? I always just scrap the bottle and throw it away.

IMG_5575.JPG

That’s the new Chilean President, a harvard-trained economist.

IMG_5579.JPG

the weird thing about OIAJ is that the bottle was deformed at the end. Maybe because of the heat.

IMG_5581.JPG

I wasn’t hungry for lunch because of massive snack: all carbs and chocolates ๐Ÿ˜ฆ so I felt needing balancing out with veggies. I made a stir-fry of tofu, black bean, brown rice and baby spinach, but seasoned too much so it was too salty ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

IMG_5583.JPG

what to do? Wraps were the rescue

IMG_5588.JPG

IMG_5590.JPG

it was funny and yummy~~~ I’ll have more wraps today ๐Ÿ˜‰

oh…. I tried Gina’s puffy egg white with spicy sauce too.

It was okay, not a super fan.

Review of Coconut Bliss Ice Cream. The lovely Kiley fromย Luna & Larryโ€™s Organic Coconut Bliss was kind enough to send me coupons for pints of theirย coconut milk-based ice cream to review for the blog. From their website:

People are continually asking us how we came up with Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss. We’d like to say we are entrepreneurial geniuses, but the truth is much humblerโ€”we just wanted a tasty frozen dessert that we could enjoy eating without feeling bad afterwards. We had both given up dairy for health and ethical reasons, and tried all the soy- and rice-based alternatives, but weren’t satisfied with any of them. They either didn’t taste good, or we felt sick after eating them, or they had a long list of ingredients that didn’t really sound like food. One day Luna said ‘what about coconut milk?’ย  We’d used it a lot in Thai-style cooking and it seemed ideal. It was naturally rich and creamy and had great nutritional properties. So with the aid of a two-dollar hand-cranked ice cream maker from Goodwill we made our first batch. As soon as we tried it, we knew we were on to something special. As time went by and we shared it with our friends, who also loved it, it became apparent to us that we should focus our energy on this and make it available to more people.

I picked Naked Coconut at WF

Coco’s review: Nutritionally speaking I like this because it’s high in fat and low in sugar! And taste-wise, it’s AMAZING! ย It tastes like the freshly made coconut ice cream. It’sย rich and creamy but without butter, eggs or heavy cream for a delicious taste. I love it! 5/5 Strongly recommended! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lastly, I started reading this book, another one about happiness! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ll keep you guys updated.

IMG_5604.JPG

maybe I’ll read this when the code runs today ๐Ÿ˜‰

Q: What’s your most important missing virtue? How do you deal with it?
