Concert & Petit Macro

Yesterday after a long nap, a friend text me about going to a concert at night. “Sure!” I replied (not even knowing which concert ). And there I was… watching Belle & Sebastian who I knew anything about πŸ˜‰

It was in DAR Constitution Hall

>2000 seats, all sold out!

the show was great! I like it a lot! I’m getting their album!!! hehehe… πŸ˜€

and there was a lot of interaction with the audience

and the best part? I was seated!!! πŸ˜‰ I’m just too old to stand for 2 hours. I enjoy more the show if I’m comfortable! πŸ˜€

Q: Do you prefer seating or standing in concerts?

As promised, here’s my review of Mayumi’s Kitchen

Mayumi worked for seven years as Madonna’s private macrobiotic chef. In this book, she shares her unique view of Macrobiotic cuisine.

What’s Petit Macro? A new take on macrobiotics that is suited to cosmopolitan tastes, with less emphasis on Japanese-style cooking. It is a stress-free way for anyone to enjoy the benefits of macrobiotics without giving up the foods and cooking styles they are used to.

Basic guidelines:

  • Avoid dairy products and animal protein because they lead to lifestyle diseases. But she says it is okay to be part of your menu every once in a while. Just eat it with vegetables that are three times the amount of the meat, by weight.
  • Use only naturally processed, unrefined ingredients, and, whenever possible, organic, locally grown vegetables.
  • Try to eat in a balance fashion, in harmony with the seasons. Chew well, finish eating for the day about 3 hours before going to bed, and stop eating before you are completely full.
  • But the most important guidelines is, don’t get bung up on guidelines!

Other recommendations:

  • Make a habit of eating leafy greens and root vegetables, as they will help your body process fat and keep you detoxified.
  • Food is important, but feeling good about what you are doing and keeping stress levels down is also important. Stay positive, and just do what you can stick with.

Her recipes are simple. Most of them no more than a few steps. She offered a beginner 10 day detox diet, a beautiful skin, a muscle-building and a weight-loss menu for 3 days.

My take: strongly recommended!

I read all the recipes in one sitting and I want to make every one of them!!! They do require some unconventional ingredients like kombu, umeboshi plums, seitan, protein meat (TVP) but they can be easily found in asian stores. I’ll do the ten day detox. I think it’s a misleading name because it involves no juicing, no special food, just a lot of natural, well balanced meals. I won’t follow it strictly because I don’t want to restrict myself in case I crave certain food; I still want to enjoy meals with my friends and I don’t want to give up coffee. Day 1 starts Monday! πŸ˜€ So exciting!!!

Here’s another use of the mushroom sauce (recipe below)

Steamed broccoli and okra, homemade sweet potato gnocchi topped with 1/2 cup tomato sauce and 1/2 cup mushroom sauce

Mushroom sauce adapted fromΒ Mayumi’s Kitchen

Ingredients for 2 cups

  • 2 cups of assorted mushrooms
  • 1 cup almond/soy milk
  • 1 medium onion
  • 4 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp WW flour
  • 2 tbsp coconut flour
  • S+P

  1. use 2 tbsp of coconut oil to brown chopped onions for 8 min. Set aside.
  2. heat 2 tbsp of coconut oil and add WW/coconut flour, mixing constantly for about 2-3 min.
  3. add almond milk to 2.
  4. combine 1 and 3, seasoned with S+P

It’s rich and creamy, slightly sweet. Very good to top steam veggies or as pasta sauce.

Q: Doing anything fun this weekend? I have a BBQ party tomorrow and I’m in charge of the bread πŸ˜‰

10K, packages and random eats

Yesterday was the Clarendon 5K & 10 K race. It was a lot of fun! πŸ˜† We were a group of 7 people, 4 of us did 10 K and 3 others did 5K for the first time, including Star. I had the target to break 50 min to improve from my last 10K. It did not happen and I had hard time to even finish it! πŸ‘Ώ What happened? A combination of poor training, over confidence after the 1/2 M and the VERY HOT weather. I’m bad running under the sun and the 10K started at 9AM when the sun was furiously hot! The course wasn’t pretty either, 80% was on the highway. Every mile was hard… specially the last two. I almost wanted to stop and walk but I kept telling me: “you’re strong! It’s time to prove it AGAIN!” So I kept going but I was suffering. 😦 Star and two other friends did the 5K for the first time. Star finished in 31 min, followed by other two by 31’30” and 38 min. They did it slowly indeed, but Β I was really happy for them to join the “club”. We had a lot of fun chatting, cheering each other. πŸ˜€ Although this time I didn’t enjoy the run so much and I didn’t reach my target, it was okay. Not every run needs to be fun nor easy. It’s part of the journey. It just makes things more exciting and challenging πŸ™‚

I got some fun packages last friday.

Iphone 4 πŸ˜†

a sample package of all-bran

Skin MD Natural for review

and books: some leisure reading and some to help dissertation writting

and some random eats that I’ve been enjoying last week.

half warm salad made with stir-fry for greens, chopped tomatoes and plain tofu (yes, you read it right, plain tofu! 😯 I must show you the packaging of this tofu… because I love its flavor!!! )

roasted squash filled with greek yogurt, figs and coconut butter

Saturday night to fuel for the race I had sweet potato gnocchi mixed with some spaghetti squash, tomato sauce and parmesan

Star had noodles with bok choy and eggs. Simple but filling πŸ™‚

Star is catching a flight to China. He’ll be there for a week 😦 so I’m by my own today. I need to work on my presentation next week. Not fun 😦 But after that… I’m going to NYC for a concert and to play with my dearest friend. πŸ˜†

Q: How do you keep your finance? I’m a mess with $$. I don’t keep any record of how much I spend. I need tips!!!

Day -2! I’m nervous

2 days away from my first Half Marathon!!! πŸ˜† I’m excited and nervous! Excitement was 80% until I saw these:

I can’t believe that I have to end it up with a HILL!!!! πŸ‘Ώ That’s not good!!!

can this get WORSE? RAIN? Seriously???? I’ve been checking weather since Monday and was crossing my finger that it changes. But apparently not! πŸ‘Ώ Now you understand where my nerve comes from, right? I’m worried and a little bit scared. Β But the good thing is that Star will be cheering me up and I’ll be running with my best friend Agustin (he already run 5-6 halfs before), my advisor (who’s >50 yrs old and run >10 races before) and Beth!!! That’s exciting!!! πŸ˜†

Well… at this stage, I I can’t do much other than eat and sleep well today. πŸ˜‰

Now let’s rewind to yesterday’s eats. Appetite is not visiting me lately 😦 so I had to be extra creative πŸ˜‰

Extra puppy coconut pancake

I wanted to try it with only egg whites but it turned out to be a mess.

After reading Emily’s post, I decided to make zucchini “noodles” for lunch

topped it with tomato sauce

add some tofu for protein

nuke in the microwave for 2 minutes. Top it with homemade sweet potato gnocchis

parmesan cheese is a MUST!

this amazing meal was ready in <15 min!

double YUM~~~

I worked at home until 3 PM when I started to lose focus. So, I went to Caribou Cafe just crossing the street (so good to be living in a city Β ;)). Worked there until 6 PM when hunger kicked in πŸ˜‰ so I went to WF (a block away) to pick something to snack

spotted a new organic yogurt

I don’t mind when it’s not thick or creamy as long as it tastes good

peach + yogurt + golean

I didn’t like the yogurt 😦 so “greeking” it as the solution

I looked at the fridge and saw this chinese winter melon. Need to use it!

dry scallop

Easy pissy! πŸ˜‰

and a stir-fry of chinese green bean, mushroom and cauliflower (my fridge is officially empty now ;))

served with black rice/oatmeal/kabocha bowl

Today is going to be an easy day. Star is coming back home in about 30 min… we’ll do groceries (I have a chinese meal feast to prepare tomorrow for his new co-workers) and mainly relax and enjoy each other’s company! πŸ˜€

Q: Are you friend of your hubby’s co-workers? Do you like socializing with them?
