Sofia: 3 weeks

Another week flew by, she’s growing so fast in term of weight and height. Although we haven’t checked on that, I can tell from how she’s fitting into the newborn clothes. I think within 1-2 weeks, we need to move into 0-3 months clothing! πŸ™‚

Awake time: we’re working on shorten awake time this week. She has been sleeping around 12 hrs a day, which is far less than the average range of 16-20 hrs for a 3 weeks old baby. The problem was we keep her awake too long when she actually needs taking naps during the day. We often overlook her cues for sleep. I should blame my mom for this. She thinks that if Sofia sleeps too much during the day, she won’t sleep at night, which is so not true for a newborn. According to all the sleep books I’ve read, sleep induces more sleep because babies cannot fall into sleep when they’re overtired. So, for the last couple of days, I try to keep awake time within 1.5 hrs including feeding time. After nursing, I’d hold her up right for 10 min, check if she looks sleepy, if she does, put her in bed, if not, I’d do simple activities as talking to her, play music, walk around until I see her getting sleepy. So far, I’d say we’ve been having 50% success rate, which it’s quite an accomplishment for doing it for just few days. Yesterday she slept 14 hrs in total with four naps during the day.

Sleep: she’s sleeping 2-3 hrs at night. For the last three days, she goes to bed after eating around 7pm, wakes up again at 9-10 PM, 12-1 AM, 2-3 AM and 5-6 AM. So 3 I get up at night three times to nurse her. I hope within the next few weeks, as her stomach gets larger, she gets longer sleeps. I’ve read Baby Wise, the Little Contented Baby,Β Baby Whisperer, and Baby Whisperer solves all your problemsΒ to learn about baby sleep. I like the Baby Whisperer’s approach the most and their forum is quite helpful as well. Sofia is still too young to follow the EASY schedule, but we’re kind of following the eat-awake-sleep pattern, so far the cycle goes from 2-2.5 hrs, hopefully it will get extended to 3 hrs before she’s 6 weeks old.

I’m still working on putting her down for naps. She likes to be hold sidewise in a rocking motion. I do that for 5-10 min, after that I put her down, sometimes she continues to sleep, other times she wakes up like this

we got a baby monitor (Motorola MBP 36) so we can watch her when she sleeps. We’ve transitioned her to sleep in the crib almost exclusively. πŸ™‚

Feeding: she’s still eating very well, every 2-2.5 hrs. We still have the issue of her falling into sleep after 10-15 min, specially when she hasn’t taken any nap, so she gets sleepy easily. I do notice that when she eats for longer than 20 min, she sleeps longer afterwards, so I need to work on to keep her awake during nursing. I’ve started pumping everyday in the morning after feeding her. I am surprised how fast the amount increased. The first 2 times, I got 1-1.5 oz from both sides, now I’m getting 3-4 oz. We will introduce the bottle TODAY so Star can feed her at midnight and I get a longer stretch of sleep.

Crying: she gets fuzzy when she needs to sleep but can’t do it by herself. She cries nonstop when she demands food. I’m learning her cries and reading her through it. It’s a work in progress. πŸ™‚

Weight: no idea. We’ll get her weight at 1 month appointment. But I do notice she’s getting heavier because my back starts to hurt when I hold her for more than 10 min. I can’t imagine holding her later on.

Milestone: she starts to roll over during tummy time. Her neck is getting stronger as she can hold it upright for few sec which is what she does every time that I hold her up right after eating.

Misc: we took her out twice last week, once to a baby-party organized by my coworkers, the other time to a mall to get some nursing cloth for me. She slept through the entire trip both times! 😯 I guess she likes the car motion. Β I plan to take her out once a day after the first month. It’s good both for her and me to get out of the house! πŸ™‚
