Mindless eating part II

Glad that you liked my review of Mindless Eating. Some of you got confused by why heavy eaters should eat with others when eating with others tend to make people eat more. So, to clarify, these are two separate statements. In average when we eat with others, we eat more because we spend more time on the table. A separate study shows that if you’re a lighter eater and want to gain weight, eat with others, it will make you to mindlessly eat more. If you’re a heavy eater when you eat alone, then it’s better to eat with others because watching what others eat (less than you) will make you to eat less. Maggie found a related article that talks why eating with skinny persons might make you eat more . check it out!

I finished the book so here’s part II

  • Information Illussions: Those eating at Subway ate under the illusion that everything they touched was good for them. Those eating at McDonald’s were more conscious about what they ate. People who eats at “healthy” restaurants or lowfat/lowcal products tend to sub-estimate how much they eat.
  • Health halos and nutritional labels: we don’t spend much time reading labels. If we see a healthy claim on the label, we buy it and don’t question much about the claim.
  • The power of three. This part of the book the author suggests how to deal with Mindless Eating. Pick three small changes and stick to them for 28 days which is what it takes to break an old habit.
  • Q&A . I found two of them quite interesting.
  1. Is the solution to Mindless Eating to be more mindful of what and how much we eat? No. The goal is not to watch out calorie 24/7, but to make small changes in our environment so it works with us rather than against us. By changing the size of packages and bowls, we mindlessly eat less. By move food away we mindlessly eat less frequently.
  2. The most surprising part of his studies was that people consistently deny that they would be influenced by something as trivial as the location of the plate, the lighting of the environment or the person next to them. We think we’re smart and would not be fooled by those small things…. but we do and do it mindlessly!

I asked yesterday whether you eat your fav food at the beginning or save for last. Well, the world is divided in half on this issue, so were your answers. Those who eat the best first are either grew up as a youngest child or came from large families. Those who save the best for last grew up as an only child or as the oldest. Is it your case? Does it make sense to you? It is for me at least πŸ™‚

It was a nice day outside but I preferred working at home. πŸ˜‰ It’s a good sign, right? meaning I love my work (if you’re new to this blog, check out About me to see what I mean by work πŸ™‚ If you’re not new, check it out too, I just updated the career part AGAIN ;)) As my parents are having good time in Los Angeles, I don’t have anything better to do, so I’d rather be productive! πŸ˜†

After seeing Krista‘s egg “mcmuffin” yesterday, I wanted egg for breakfast!

Worked until 1PM, lunch was ready in 20 min. Sauteed kale, sauteed green beans with soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds.

With an empty fridge, I didn’t have many degree of freedom for dinner. 😦 So I used backup solution: Mom’s Won Ton. My childhood favorite meal. I used this seaweed soup as base

DSC09360.JPG DSC09361.JPG

added extra seaweed, white pepper and sesame oil

Q: What’s your backup solution when your fridge is empty?

Don’t forget about BSI, you still have few hours to work on! πŸ˜‰

That is so interesting! It’s very true for me. I’m the oldest of three daughters and I always eat my favorite part of the meal last.

  2. Kale always looks so fresh when I see it on other’s blog but I am still scared to try the stuff again after the first time, eeehh.. didn’t turn out so well.

Super colorful and refreshing-looking juice! Oh wow.. that is so weird. I am the oldest and I save my favorite part of the meal for last. It makes sense though.

  3. Hooray for mom saving the day with the meal! πŸ˜€

That’s opposite for me – I save the best for last, and I’m the youngest.

  4. Becky

It’s kinda the opposite for me, I save the best for last and I’m a middle child. I have a question about the chocolate-chia pudding- how do you make the chia gel, like the ratios? And then do you just put everything in a blender or food processor? It looks so good I want to try! I’ve made your chocolate soy pudding and it’s delicious!

  5. Oh man, that quantitative analysis book gave me the creeps!! haha.
Weirdly I do save the best for last, and I was an only child for 13 years. MAkes sense!

I never let my fridge get empty, as I live too close to Kroger to ever let that happen! I just take a 2 minute walk right across the street and pick up what I need!

The won tons look so delicious. I’m a fan of won ton soup, but I’ve never had them plan. I bet they are great, especially homemade by your mom!

  6. I’m the oldest! That’s so cool. Very very interesting.

  7. i’ve never had won ton before but it sure does look amazing!! love all of your eats πŸ™‚

yet another book I want to read. I just finished In the Defense of Food and loved it!

  8. Menden (Skinny Menny)

Interesting! I’m the oldest, and I always save the best for last πŸ™‚

Looks like a bunch of yummy eats for the day!

I had so much trouble this weekend, with my fridge empty πŸ˜€ So I looked at the freezer, saw some potato dumplings with plums, and I indulged a bit in them πŸ™‚ yummy πŸ™‚

  10. This is an excellent snapshot of the book!! Interesting insights too. I’m the oldest child of 2, but I always eat the best/favorite first! The reason is because at home, we eat family style and my dad is a REALLY fast eater. If I don’t eat the best first, then it will be gone. hahaha πŸ˜›

CoCo your fridge is SO empty!!! WAhhhh I wish I could give you some of my fridge ingredients!! Time for grocery shopping right? I can’t believe you can make so many good looking dishes with such an empty fridge. I’m really impressed!

  11. interesting factoids! i think they’re def on the money with them, the lightning and bowl sizes and stuff!

  12. Wow – all the food looks so healthy! Yumm!

I bought that book “Mindless Eating” – I can’t wait to read it!

  13. When our fridge is empty we usually have some sort of pasta (often olive oil, garlic & cheese – we always have some sort of cheese no matter what!) or fried rice with veggies & seaweed.

  14. I am the oldest child and I save my favorite parts for last…always πŸ˜‰

  15. My fridge/pantry is empty a lot especially when I am at school. I usually have frozen veggies and/or canned beans that I can whip together quickly. Otherwise I’ll eat random stuff like oatmeal or dried fruit with almond butter, haha.

I do go grocery shopping a lot so I rarely run out of food πŸ™‚

  16. Thanks for the shout out!!!

I found the first part of this post VERY interesting! I have always saved the “best” food on my plate for last adn guess what? I am the oldest of 3. How about that?! πŸ˜‰

Because I have a fam and it’s not just moi, my fridge never really gets empty. It’s more likely to get “low”. There always seems to be eggs which we will fall back on…or grilled cheese!!

  17. When my fridge it empty, I hit my pantry. As a bargain shopper, my pantry is always filled with stuff.
