A balanced, colorful and delicious meal

I’m not a person who reminds about past often, I live in the present and looking forward to the future. But sometimes it’s good to do a quick recap of life to fully appreciate what we have now.

I remember when I was a kid, we (me and my parents) lived in one room (<150 square feet). Three of us together, a full size bed, a sofa, a table, 3 chairs, a wardrobe, a TV had to fit in that room. We shared the bathroom and the kitchen with another family. A little crowded but we were happy. Then we moved to Argentina when I was 9 years old, again we lived in a room with only bathroom and no kitchen. We survived happily again. Now, I live by my won in a 600 square feet one bedroom apartment. My parents live in a well-decorated two bedroom apartment in Shanghai. They’re happy but I stressed out often. But looking back, I was we’ve accomplished a lot to where we are right now. I need to be more grateful and be confident that future will be even better. 🙂

After a long day (between working, cursing, napping, snacking and finally figured something out), I treated myself with a good meal. I’ve been eating poorly during the day and hoping to cover all my nutrition needs at night. Mindless eating have been more often. 😦

Look this mini kitchen gadget that I bought in San Francisco for steam little amount of food.

  1. Thanks for sharing some of your history with us! I think it’s easy for us to forget how much we have here in the US.
For some reason, one thing I remember really well from when I was little (maybe 4? 5?) was one time we came home after a month or two in Guatemala visiting family, my brother and sister told me I forgot how to speak English! I would say “no I’m speaking English now!” and they would both respond “no you’re speaking Spanish, you don’t even realize!” Silly story but for some reason I’ll never forget that!

  2. Look how far you have come! Your family must be so proud of you!

This meal looks terrific. I love the texture that black and white fungus adds to dishes.

  3. Well said! We should all appreciate what we have now 😀 it’s a long journey !

The steaming gadget is really cool. I should get one too, and use the steaming function more 😀

  4. malpaz

wow where do you get fungus, how does it taste and how do you cook it!?!?! i want to try yams but we only have sweet potatoes here- grr…ho hum, your meals look tasty though!

childhood memory… playing tball in the front yard with my dad and 2 brothers while our rotty dog ran around and my mom watched us !

  5. WOW…you’ve come a long way. And better for it, I’ll bet. I think you’re right….it’s good to look back to see how far we’ve come.

  6. It is amazing to see how far you and your family has come! I bet your parents are very proud of you 🙂

  7. I feel like so many people come from REALLY privileged backgrounds and take it for granted…And sometimes, even if they earned their current success, they sometimes forget their humble beginnings. My parents started off so similar to your parents, though I always lived in an apartment with a kitchen! I wonder if you love cooking and being in the kitchen so much because you didn’t have all that when you were a kid. I hope you’re proud of yourself for everything you’ve achieved. I bet you’re also proud of your parents. 🙂 You’re a girl with strong values…I love it!

My strongest childhood memories are actually really random. I remember eating a big mac and an apple pie from McDonalds after school all the time (SO BAD!!!) and I remember sad things, like when my parents fight. But overall, I have A LOT of them!!! Most of them good, I promise!!

  8. A great reminder to be thankful for all we have in life. We are all very privileged, truly, whether we realize it or not.
Coco, you say that you’re often negative, but I find a lot of your posts so positive & inspirational!

  9. Love your mini steamer!
I also like your colorful meal–that’s how I strive to eat:)

  10. The mini steamer rocks and that salmon looks too good!!

Oh when i was little we lived in a 3 bedroom house , one bathroom, and I had 4 sisters!!!!! It was crazy!!! I was glad when my dad got a better job when I was 13 and we got a bigger house : )

have a great night ! xoxo

  11. I agree, it’s good to look back on what you’ve accomplished. You have a lot to be proud of! 🙂 That little steamer is so cute! I am seriously craving sauerkraut now. 😉

  12. I can only repeat Karla: Thanks for sharing your story!
We should all appreciate more what we have. There are so many people who are a lot less lucky than we are.

  13. You’re right you know. It’s all about counting your blessings and living in the moment! 

  14. oh that salmon looks great!

  15. Eeeep I want that kitchen gadget! That is so cool!

You know whats funny, I can remember a lot of memories from when I was little but the first one that came to mind was me choking on a flinstones vitamin when I was like 6. I have no idea where that one came from haha 🙂
